Continuation on the life of: The late Mr. Joseph E. Rawsthorne
Stock Breeding Operations
The late Mr. Rawsthorne was a noted breeder of Durham cattle, draught blood horses and he raced a number of his own horses. In the early 80’s while at Carrawobitty, he went to Melbourne and purchased a Durham bull named Cleveland, for which he paid 300 guineas. Then from the Hon. George Lee at Bathurst, he secured 20 stud book heifers, and his cattle were unbeaten in the Show rings at many surrounding centres till Messrs. Edols Bros. of Big Burrawong, imported Durham cattle from England and started breeding on a large scale. A bull on Jemalong had stud duty at the high fee of 20 guineas and Mr. Rawsthorne sent many of his heifers to him. He also bred Herefords and Shorthorns, and in 1901 was unbeaten in these classes at Forbes, Parkes and Grenfell Shows.
A lifelong lover of good horses, Mr. Rawsthorne was a breeder of draughts and had such sires as Emperor and Lothan Lad on Carrawobitty. Another Clydesdale stallion he bought at the Sydney sales was the New Zealand bred Douglas, by Wallace, a prolific sire in the district. He also purchased at a high figure, a draft horse Gun Shot, after he had won the two year old championship prize at the Sydney Show, and stood him in this district.
Mr. Rawsthorne also purchased the blood stallion Oliffe, by Marabalong from Bridesmaid, whose sire was Yattendon, and after winning a number of races with him retired him to the stud, his progeny winning many races at country meetings. Marsden and Tichborne held particularly good race meetings in those days, and Mr. Rawsthorne raced horses with success at these meetings, as well as at Grenfell, Forbes, Condobolin, Parkes, and as far north as Bourke. He had always been a supporter and member of the Forbes Show Society and Jockey Club, and served as a committee man on both bodies, while the Forbes Picnic Race Club, in its early days, had no more loyal member. As a matter of fact in the days when he was on Carrawobitty he was the originator of a race club which annually conducted meetings there, in the manner of those held earlier on old Wowingragong course, where his father before him won a race with Jack Straw at the first race meeting ever conducted on the Lachlan River in these parts.
By the demise of Mr. Joseph Rawsthorne, Forbes loses a man who left his mark on the early pages of the district history and one who through-out his lifetime was highly spoken of and esteemed for his kindly disposition and straight dealings.

Obituary
Mrs. Maria Louisa Rawsthorne, 86 years of age, relict of the late J. E. Rawsthorne, died last Saturday night, in the Forbes District Hospital following a fall when she broke her hip. Deceased was on a visit to her son Mr. J. Rawsthorne of Bandon Street. Her funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 11 o’clock to the Church of England Cemetery.
Forbes Advocate Tuesday 23rd March, 1943
The above old lady came from her daughter’s place at Cootamundra.
Obituary
Mrs. Maria Louisa Rawsthorne.
The death of Mrs. Maria Louisa Rawsthorne, briefly mentioned in the second edition of last Friday’s issue removes from our midst one of the few remaining links with the early days of the district. The old lady who three weeks ago came from her daughter’s place at Cootamundra on a visit to her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Rawsthorne of Bandon Street, had the misfortune last Saturday week to slip and fracture her thigh. At her great age of 86 years there was no possibility of the break knitting, and after five days of agony passed away in the District Hospital last Saturday night.
The deceased was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Grant Morris, who owned Walla Walla (South Condobolin Road) before it was separated from Riversleigh, was born on the former property,. Afterwards, she went with her parents to the Coonamble district, where her father had two properties, but returned to marry Mr. Joseph E. Rawsthorne (who passed away in August, 1938) when with his brother Morris, he held Carrawobitty Station. They were married at Bogabigal (then part of Carrawobitty) according to the Church of England rites, and seven of their nine children were born there during a lengthy residence close to Forbes. Afterwards, she accompanied her husband to Melrose and Merriwee, when he acquired those properties in the Condobolin district, but she still often visited Forbes where her husband had a number of town properties.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Rawsthorne were strong supporters of the Forbes P.A. & H. Association and while Mr. Rawsthorne was a big exhibitor for many years, Mrs. Rawsthorne, who was a noted horsewoman, completed in the show ring and took many prizes as a rider. On one occasion, when at Carcoar and her husband had left some little time previously for Melbourne, she jumped on a race mare and rode 12 miles to Forbes in half an hour to give her husband a message to convey on behalf of a friend to someone in the Southern Capitol. The Forbes District Hospital was another institution in which Mr. And Mrs. Rawsthorne took a keen active interest, while church affairs always occupied a place in her life.
The late Mr. Joseph Rawsthorne’s family came to Forbes before the gold rush in 1861, and it was only natural that in her subsequent married life, Mrs. Rawsthorne had a number of direct experiences which related to the bushrangers.
Only three members of her family, one son and two daughters survive the deceased - they are Mr. James Rawsthorne (Forbes) Mrs. Burrows (Elsie) of Cootamundra and Mrs. Speedy (Dot) of New Zealand.
The funeral on Saturday morning was to the Church of England cemetery the remains being laid beside those of her husband. Rev. A. E. White performed the service at the graveside, while Mr. A. G. Jones directed the obsequies.

Life was extinct. So far full particulars of the sad happening are not available but it transpires that on Mrs. Scott visiting the room at about 7 o’clock this morning, she made a dreadful discovery.
