    Notes
    • Echoes of the past
Snugly seated beaneath a spreading cedar tree at the home of Mr. G.Pennell, in West Coonamble, a representive of the " Times " on Sunday afternoon chatted with Mrs M. J. Lees, widow of the late Mr Timothy Lees of this town.

It was elicited at the onset that Mrs Lees resides in Namoi St. East Coonamble, from this abode she often spends an afternoon with the Pennell family, intimate friends of many years standing. The trying conditions of a Coonamble summer does not deter the old lady from crossing the sandy Castlereagh or continuing the comparative long trek to her friends on the outskirts of town.

      Native of Hartley
Mrs Lees is 84 years of age. A native of Hartley, close to Bowenfels N.S.W., she is the daughter of the late Mr & Mrs John Lees, who formerly owned and resided in the Walgett district, the name which Mrs Lees for the moment failed to recollect. With her parents she came to Coonamble when a little girl, and lived for a while in unpretentious premises near where Wright Heaton & Co offices are now situated. In thoses days the train from Sydney did not run as far as Dubbo, the proverbial bullock team, a recognised form of transit, conveying the family from Hartley to Coonamble.

      The Old Days
Mrs Lees decribes Coonamble in those days as 'a wild, uninviting place'. To the left and right dense timber were encountered, with no definite prospects of the town emerging into a centre of prominence. The Castlereagh was without a traffice bridge and for a long while pot holes here and there were the only source of a water supply. Occasionally the river would be in flood, to the delight of settlers and their dependants.

      First Hospital
Eventually, the population increased, the main business centre of the town being confned to what is now known as the Southern end of Castlereagh and Namoi Streets. Where Angus Campbell now resides was the first public hospital. ( This is contradicted by an older resident, who states that Mr Campbell's resident was the site of the second hospital, a futher reference to which will appear in our next issue).

Near the resisence of Mr WO McWilliam stood Cobb & Co's stables, while on the site of 'The Willows'
near Highgate College, Mr Alick McGregor and his family lived. The late Mr Herrman conducted a general store (as already pointed out) at the lower end of Castlereagh Street, alongside the present Tattsall's Hotel, Hong Sing Chong also conducted a store. On the Warrena Creek, close to the present traffic bridge, stood the old Red Bull (Red Cow) Hotel conducted by Mrs Goodall. This was a fimiliar landmark the remains of which might be seen today.

      Plenty of Kangaroos
In those days, contiinued Mrs Lees, there were plenty of kangaroos in and around Coonamble. In fact the bush was alive with them, many were shot by the settlers. Rabbits, at the time had not invaded the district, the whole countryside, from a pest standpoint, being confined to the kangaroos.

      The Family
Mrs Lees is the mother of a family of eight, of whom one son and four gaughters survive. These are Mr Timothy Lees (an invalid), Mrs P Kenny (Wingadee), Mrs Alf Pennell (Coonamble), Mrs W Smith (Coonamble), and Mrs F Randall (near Sydney). A brother, Mr Josiah Morris, died in Walgett Hospital, about three years ago.
