    Notes
    • THE HOLD UP OF CANOWINDRA

Early one morning Hall and his bushrangers woke the owner of the
Robinson Hotel in Canowindra and took over his building. They gathered
all the town's people (about 40 of them) and kept them at the Hotel
for 3 days. They treated their prisoner's well giving them food and
drink, even providing music and other entertainment to create a party
atmosphere. They did make the only policeman of the town march up and
down along the verandah of the Hotel.

Eventually Hall agreed that it was fair to let the prisoners go so
that they could return home. He even gave some 'expenses money' to
      them.

The object of this 'Hold up' was not to frighten the town people but
to show the power he had and his dislike for the Police.

This is one of the incidents that amused ordinary people and they
admired bushrangers as the poor peoples champions.

But the police were furious at this disrespect.

      --------
In 1890 Arthur and Susanna Elbourne and their family of nine children moved from Bathurst on to a property called "Old Tinandra", near Woodstock after a few years on Old Tinandra
the family moved on to another property called "Gum Creek" about 10 km west of Canowindra. Their elder son Arthur, met and married Cecilia Ann Moss. Her father was Thomas Moss,
      Blossom Vale Station, Woodstock.
On the Gum Creek property, near Canowindra, some of the family set up and operated a saw milling business. About 8 km south of Gum Creek and 8 km west of Canowindra is another district
called Nyrang Creek on the Canowindra - Eugowra Road. At Nyrang Creek, on the property called "Toonarabin" William and Alice Jones were raising a family of three boys and six girls. As the two
families where within a short horse riding distance of each other, the outcome was three of the Elbourne boys married three of the Jones girls. These marriages were George and Gertrude Jack and Amy and Edward and Alice.1911 at Nyrang Creek. Alice takes her name from her mother,
Alice Gertrude Heilbronn, whose parents were Adolf Heilbronn and Sara Turner Heilbronn. The Heilbronn family arrived in Melbourne on the ship "David Fleming" in November 1859. They were Sara, aged 36, four children, Thomas, age 15, Adolph, aged 11, Alice, aged 10,and George, aged 9. Her husband Adolph is not shown on the shipping list and may have died in England. Adolph Heilbronn had fled Germany in fear of his life and little information about him was ever made known to
      his grandchildren.
Prior to his marriage, Edward Elbourne was working on a large sheep station near Condoblin and had become manager of the place. On one occasion, around 1908, with only one assistant, he took
a large mob of sheep from Condoblin down into Victoria, which took over three months to complete. After Edward married Alice Jones in 1911, he commenced a Cyprus Pine sawmilling business on the bank of the Mandagery Creek in Eugowra. His brother George, who had earlier married Gertrude Jones, joined him as a partner in this venture. The mill operated as 'Elbourne Brothers'. During World War I,
George Elbourne enlisted in the army and died at sea on his way to the war in France. Joseph Elbourne, an older brother, married to Louisa Hay, then joined Edward in the sawmill business. A third partner was later to join the business. He was James Hay, Joseph's brother-in-law. Joseph Elbourne and James then bought Edward's share in the business and Edward continued to work at the mill as an employee until the late 1940s.
